Beltrami County, Minn. Approves Tobacco 21 Ordinance
Legislators in Beltrami County, Minn. gave their approval to an ordinance increasing the minimum age to purchase tobacco products and tobacco alternatives, raising it from 18 to 21-years-old by a 4-1 vote on Tuesday night.
When it goes into effect, the ordinance will make it illegal for a person under 21 to purchase tobacco, though it does not affect existing rules regarding the possession or use of tobacco, e-cigarettes and vaping devices. What remains to be decided is when the ordinance will go into effect and how the increase will be rolled out. That is set to be decided at the board’s Feb. 5 meeting.
Beltrami County is located in the northern part of Minnesota and is home to approximately 46,500 residents.
