Rehoboth Beach is discussing a change in the city’s laws that would ban smoking on the beach and boardwalk on the Delaware coast. The proposal comes after Steve Curson, whose mother died from long cancer, petitioned for smoking to be banned in those areas.

Mayor Sam Cooper indicated that he does not believe the laws will work.

“I’m searching through what’s been given as reasons for this and I’m seeing potential holes,” said Cooper.

The city is expected to take up a revised proposal from Commissioner Stan Mills next month.

The city banned smoking in parks in 2011. Rehoboth Beach has a year-long population barely over 1,000 and is located in the southeastern part of the state. In the summer, the city expands to over 25,000 residents.
