Arlington Heights, Ill. To Increase Tobacco Purchase Age
On Monday, the Arlington Heights Village Council unanimously approved the first reading of a proposal that will raise the minimum age to purchase tobacco and tobacco alternative products in the Chicago suburb from 18 to 21-years-old.
The ordinance, which passed 8-0, still needs to be approved on its second reading, which is likely to occur on Jan. 22. Once passed, it will go into effect in 10 days, though a report by DailyHerald.com indicated that police won’t begin enforcing the change for 30 days, following an education period for retailers. The law does not change the minimum age to possess tobacco products.
Arlington Heights is located approximately 27 miles northwest of Chicago and has a population of just over 75,000 residents.
