Arkansas will become one of twelve states that will require individuals to purchase tobacco to be 21.

Somewhat quietly, the state passed H.B. 1980 last month that modifies the state’s existing tobacco laws. In it is a change that will increase those purchasing tobacco to be at least 21 effective Sept. 1, 2019.

There are two exceptions. First, those serving in the U.S. military will be allowed to purchase tobacco if they are under 21. Second, anyone who will be at least 19 by Dec. 31, 2019 will be allowed to purchase tobacco without being 21.

Eleven other states have increased the minimum age to purchase tobacco to 21.
