The minimum age to purchase tobacco products is now 21-years-old in Arkansas, which joins Texas in officially becoming members of the Tobacco 21 movement.
The legislation was passed in April, and comes with two exceptions to the increase. First, those serving in the U.S. military will be allowed to purchase tobacco if they are under 21. Second, anyone who will be at least 19 by Dec. 31, 2019 will be allowed to purchase tobacco without being 21.
A total of 18 states as well as the District of Columbia have passed Tobacco 21 legislation, though not every state’s age has increased yet. Maryland, Connecticut, Ohio, Washington and Utah will see their increases go into effect in the coming months.
