Alaska Governor Signs Smoking Ban Bill
A bill that will impose a widespread smoking ban in Alaska will be implemented this fall after Gov. Bill Walker signed into law on Tuesday.
S.B. 63 bans smoking at most businesses in the state, including bars, restaurants and most other private businesses. Tobacconists, e-cigarette retailers and private clubs are exempt from the rule so long as they have proper ventilation and do not serve alcohol. Private clubs will be grandfathered in so long as their location has not moved since Jan. 1, 2017.
A provision added during the legislative process allows local municipalities to opt out of the ban by conducting a public vote.
The bill was passed by the Alaska House of Representatives in May and by the Senate in 2017.
The new law will go into effect Oct. 1.
