The new year will bring yet another new ban on smoking, as the Wareham Board of Health unanimously passed a ban on smoking on beaches and in parks and recreation areas that will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2016.
While the ban covers both traditional smoked tobacco products and e-cigarettes, it does contain an interesting loophole, according to Wareham Week, which noted that it doesn’t apply to a person in the water, but only on dry land. In theory, a person could have both feet in the water and be smoking a cigar without being in violation of the new law.
The ban also applies to beaches in the census designated community of Onset, which has a population of nearly 1,600 residents.
Wareham is home to nearly 22,000 residents and is located in the Cape Cod area, in the southeast corner of the state.
