Ask someone about cigar pairings, and you’ll likely get an answer about some kind of beverage, most likely one containing alcohol. But in February, Davidoff answered that question with food, or more specifically, with a group of six chefs who “applied their refined palates in influencing” the Davidoff Chefs Edition, a limited edition release of 15,000 cigars that were created in connection to the company’s Tour Gastronomique in the Dominican Republic.

The cigar itself is a mix of Dominican and Ecuadorian tobacco released in a single 6 x 54 toro vitola and bearing the familiar white Davidoff band as well as a secondary band that comes with a secondary band bearing the obligatory, if somewhat expected, chef’s hat icon. Flavor-wise, it shares some aspects with the core white label line but scored points with our staff for how it exudes balance and complexity with a mix of flavors that run the gamut from sweet and creamy to earth, cedar and espresso.

In a year that saw a number of limited editions from Davidoff, the Chefs Edition stood out for its ability to exhibit the kind of flavors that come from being crafted in part by the hands and palates of culinary experts. — Patrick Lagreid.
