As of the stroke of midnight this morning there is yet another town in Massachusetts where you need to be at least 21-years-old to purchase tobacco and nicotine delivery products, as Southwick’s increase has gone into effect.

The change was approved by the town’s board of health on Aug. 4. Retailers who violate the new law by selling tobacco, e-cigarettes or similar products to a person under 21 will face a first offense fine of $100, while a second violation within 36 months will result in a $200 fine and a suspension of their tobacco retailer permit for seven days.

A third violation within 36 months carries a $300 fine and 30 day suspension of the permit.

Southwick joins an ever growing list of more than 130 towns and cities who have increased the tobacco purchasing age from the state minimum of 18-years-old.

Southwick is located in southwestern Massachusetts, 11 miles southwest of Springfield. The town has a population of approximately 9,500 residents.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
