South Bethany, Del. Bans Smoking on Beaches
While South Bethany, Del. may be home to just under 500 residents, it does have a reputation for having an enjoyable beach on the Atlantic Ocean. But that beach will no longer be a place to enjoy a cigar or any smoked tobacco product, as the town council voted 5-1 on Friday to enact a ban on lighting up on the sand.
The ban, which went into effect yesterday, also prohibits smoking on the beach access walkways and all handicapped walkways. New signage will be installed in the near future to make beachgoers aware of the ban.
The ordinance that has been posted on the town’s website does not include mentions of fines for violators, but WBOC.com reports that smokers will be given a verbal warning to stop smoking before facing a $50 fine for repeat offenses.
South Bethany becomes the latest Delaware municipality to ban smoking on its beaches, joining Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, Ocean City, Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island.
