In a few months, it will be illegal for those under the age of 21 to purchase tobacco products in the city of San Francisco.

The city supervisors voted unanimously in favor of the law, which will go into effect on June 1.

New York City and Boston have passed similar laws, as as the state of Hawaii.

There has been some discussion about whether the law is legal under California state law, but it seems unlikely the state’s attorney general, Kamala Harris, will take up the matter.

San Francisco is home to 850,000 residents and more than 4.5 million persons in the metro area.
