Portland, Maine Begins Process of Raising Age to Purchase Tobacco

City leaders in Portland, Maine are scheduled to begin the process of raising the minimum age to purchase tobacco and nicotine delivery products tomorrow, when the City Council’s Health and Human Services Committee is scheduled to discuss the issue.

It appears that the committee will make a recommendation to the full council to take up the issue and draft an ordinance, according to the Portland Press Herald. The current plans seems to address the purchasing–not possession–of tobacco products, raising the minimum age to buy tobacco to 21-years-old but keeping it legal for anyone 18 to 21 to use it.

Portland Mayor Ethan Strimling has already announced his support for the increase.
