The Paxton City Council took a step forward to banning smoking at public parks in the eastern Illinois town.

A vote on whether to approve the new law is scheduled for Oct. 10. The council voted 7-1 in favor of holding the vote.

While the ordinance was proposed by Mayor Bill Ingold, he has acknowledged that the law will be tough to enforce.

Paxton is located in Ford County, about 25 miles north of Champaign. It has a population around 5,000.
