While the price of cigarettes will be going up in the state of Oklahoma, cigar taxes will not.

The state’s new budget includes a $1.50 per pack increase on the cigarette fee, but an attempt to raise the taxes, or fees, on cigars from 12 to 17 cents per cigar has failed according to the Cigar Association of America.

There is a debate about whether the $1.50 for cigarettes is a tax or a fee. It was passed after a deadline for introducing new taxes, as such, it’s been classified as a fee. Some politicians believe that the new increase will be a matter decided by the courts.

The 12 cents per cigar is one of the lowest taxes applied to cigars by states in the U.S.
