Come Jan. 1, smoking in Hickory, N.C.’s public parks will be banned as the city is going tobacco-free as part of a joint-initivaite between the Catawba County Public Health Department and the N.C. Community Transformation Grant Project.

The City Council approved the measure on Dec. 3. It is said to affect 23 parks and other recreation areas.

Hickory, N.C. is located in the western part of the sate. It has a population of just over 40,000 and is the largest city in Catawba County.
