Beginning Jan. 1, smoking will be prohibited within 25 feet of many of Cumberland County’s properties in the start of what could be an extended fight over smoking. According to The Fayetteville Observer, smoking will be banned at all libraries, the Health Department, Social Services, the Womack Army Medical Center and other properties.

On July 1, the list of places where smoking is banned within 25 feet will add the Sheriff’s Office, jail, Animal Control and the remainder of the country courthouse, but that does not appear to be the end.

Next month, the Cumberland County Smoke-Free Committee will decide its future plans, which could include bans on sidewalks, bus stops and other areas, similar to the ban implemented by Durham, N.C. in 2012.

Cumberland County is located in south-central North Carolina with a population of 320,000 and includes both Fayetteville and Fort Bragg.
