Last month, the Newark Municipal Council unanimously passed Ordinance 14-0338, banning smoking at parks, recreational facilities, community centers and city-owned or city-operated cars. According to a report from NJ.com, tomorrow, Mayor Ras Baraka will sign the new law into effect.

Not only smoking will be banned in those respective places, but also within 50 feet of the places, up from the current 25 feet.

The new law establishes fines of $250 for one offense, $500 for a second and $1,000 for each additional offense.

Newark is New Jersey’s largest city with a population over 275,000.
