The company’s Casa Mombacho factory is based in Granada, Nicaragua, while its offices are located in Toronto. Mombacho has been in existence for approximately eight years, selling directly to tourists who visit the factory as well as to select markets in Canada, Italy and China. The name comes from the nearby stratovolcano known as Mombacho, which means “mother of our islands” in the local indigenous culture, and Tierra Volcán references the fact that the land that Granada and the surrounding area sits on was formed by the volcano. The first known eruption dates back nearly 20,000 years.

The blend is a Nicaraguan puro, with a sungrown Habano seed wrapper from Jalapa, Condega Criollo for the binder and a filler of leaves from Jalapa and Condega. They were blended by Claudio Sgroi, who joined Mombacho in September 2011.

It’s a regular production line for the company, with 2014 production estimated to be approximately 140,000 cigars.

The Mombacho Tierra Volcán will make its official U.S. debut at the upcoming IPCPR Convention and Trade Show being held July 19-23 in Las Vegas, which will be Mombacho’s first time at the annual industry event. So far, the company has shown off a 4 x 50 vitola called Corto and a 5 1/2 x 50 vitola called Clasico on its Facebook page. The full range of sizes includes a 6 1/4 x 54 Grande and 4 3/4 x 26 Volcanito, which comes in a six-pack. The other three sizes are all available in 24-count boxes, while the Clasico is also available in boxes of three and eight. Pricing is still being finalized.

The Mombacho Classico Robusto was reviewed on halfwheel in June 2012.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for MLB.com, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
