As promised last year when the line was launched, Crowned Heads will be releasing another Las Calaveras this year.

The Las Calaveras Edición Limitada 2015 is composed of Nicaraguan tobacco for both the binder and filler, and is covered in a habano rosado from Ecuador. Two of the three vitolas are the same as last year’s release — a 5 x 50 robusto dubbed LC50 ($9.95) and a 6 x 52 toro known as LC52 ($10.95)—but this year the third vitola a 5 5/8 x 46 corona gorda named LC46 ($8.95). The 2013 edition of the Las Calaveras had a 7 x 54 churchill.

Each vitola is limited to 1,250 boxes of 24 with cigars arranged in three rows of eight cigars inside the box. As with the Las Calaveras Edición Limitada 2014, the 2015 version is being rolled at  My Father Cigars S.A. in Estelí, Nicaragua.

Crowned Heads has stated the annual cigar release was specifically inspired by La Calavera Catrina, a zinc etching by José Guadalupe Posada.

The image depicts a female skeleton dressed only in a hat, and has become an icon of the Mexican Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. The holiday focuses upon gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember those who have died.

Beginning with the Edicion Limitada 2014, Las Calaveras will be an annual release that is a respectful homage to those who have passed away in the year before, and is intended to be a celebration of their lives and remembrances, rather than a mourning or a symbol of sadness and death. Each year, we all lose a friend or loved one, or know of someone who has endured that same loss. In today’s fast-paced world, it is all too easy to forget the fragile nature that is life. Often, in the race to gain material success, we lose sight that our true legacy are the lives we touch and the love we leave behind once we pass on. It is in this spirit that Las Calaveras pays tribute to those who have touched our lives and shared their love.

The bands for this year’s release retain the same style as last year’s with a slight tweak to the color scheme.

According to Jon Huber, co-owner of Crowned Heads, the Las Calaveras Edición Limitada 2015 will ship to retailers in May.

I have been smoking cigars for over eight years. A documentary wedding photographer by trade, I spent seven years as a photojournalist for the Dallas Morning News and the Fort Worth Star Telegram. I started the cigar blog SmokingStogie in 2008 after realizing that there was a need for a cigar blog with better photographs and more in-depth information about each release. SmokingStogie quickly became one of the more influential cigar blogs on the internet, known for reviewing preproduction, prerelease, rare, extremely hard-to-find and expensive cigars. I am a co-founder of halfwheel and now serve as an editor for halfwheel.
