As early as next month, the Lakewood City Council could announce bans on park smoking. While the largest city in Pierce County—Tacoma—banned smoking at parks five years ago, the Lakewood, a suburb, is divided on the measure.

Last month the Park and Recreation Advisory Board unanimously recommended the ban, but many on the City Council have announced their opposition to a ban ranging from enforcement issues to an overreach in powers.

If Mayor Don Anderson has his way, it appears a comprise of designated smoking areas will be formally proposed, but it remains to be seen what the law will look like for the near 60,000 person city.
