With the 2015 Super Bowl coming to Glendale, Ariz., La Flor Dominicana announced on Saturday that it would be creating a limited edition release with a football tie-in just for Arizona retailers, a cigar that could be the start of a new series for the company.

The La Flor Dominicana Special Football Edition was announced Saturday on Twitter via both La Flor Dominicana’s account and that of Jon Carney, the company’s vice-president of sales.

Carney told halfwheel that the cigar will be an entirely new blend that uses an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, Nicaraguan binder and Dominican filler. As shown in the pictures, the cigar will feature a football design on the wrapper just underneath the band, an idea sparked by a visit to a Phoenix-area retailer.

It measures 5 3/4 x 60 and will come packed in ten-count boxes with an MSRP of $120 per box and $12 per cigar. The cigar is being offered exclusively to Arizona retailers, though there is no official tie-in between the NFL and LFD, so neither the game’s logo nor that of the NFL will appear on the packaging. “The cigar is a celebration of football,” Carney said.

He added that the cigar is currently in production with a confirmed release of early January 2015, but the company has not confirmed production numbers as of yet. Carney will be in the Phoenix area for a week of LFD events leading up to the game, and noted that if the the project is successful, LFD is considering releasing of a variation of this cigar each year in the state hosting the Super Bowl.

Update (Dec. 10, 2014) — Now scheduled for next week.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
