IPCPR 2017: Curivari

Last year there was a rush to get dozens of new blends on the market, and Curivari was no exception. Since then, the packaging has been finalized and they were ready to show off. Many of the new releases are Greek themed, as an homage to owner Andreas Throuvalas’s heritage. While Throuvalas might not like talking on camera, he certainly does enjoy talking about his passion for cigars—so that’s exactly what we did.

As I said, many of the new cigars have a Greek theme to them, and the ones that don’t just carry the Curivari name. Another interesting thing to note is that all but four are Nicaraguan puros, with Throuvalas preferring to show off Nicaraguan tobacco and using different farms and vintages to create a blend, as opposed to different countries. Of the three that aren’t Nicaraguan puros, they use a Mexican San Andrés wrapper over Nicaraguan tobaccos — so he didn’t stray far.

I have been smoking cigars since 2005 and reviewing them as a hobby since 2010. Initially, I started out small with a 50-count humidor and only smoking one or two cigars a month. Not knowing anybody else that smoked cigars, it was only an occasional hobby that I took part in. In March of 2010, I joined Nublive and Cigar Asylum, connecting me with many people who also shared an interest in cigars. Reading what they had to say about brands I had never heard of, I quickly immersed myself in the boutique brands of the industry and it was then that cigars transformed from a hobby into a passion.
