The first day of the 2016 IPCPR Convention & Trade Show is in the bag, and here are some of the things I have heard while walking around the floor:

  1. There are numerous people talking about the impending Aug. 8 FDA deadline, almost to the point where you can’t pass a group of more than two without hearing about it. In addition, the seminar for retailers to explain the various aspects of the regulations was both well attended and well received, a big difference from previous years.
  2. In three of the booths I visited today, there were products or packaging that could not be shown—or were incomplete—due to the fact that there were so many projects that were being rushed through the factories to meet the aforementioned deadline.
  3. While multiple manufacturers told me that they were surprised at how people were coming by the booths, they also followed that comment up with the fact that the orders they have taken so far have been far above the average they normally see on the first day.
  4. I lost track of how many times I heard a variation of “Wow, I am so glad the IPCPR is back in Vegas!”

I have been smoking cigars for over eight years. A documentary wedding photographer by trade, I spent seven years as a photojournalist for the Dallas Morning News and the Fort Worth Star Telegram. I started the cigar blog SmokingStogie in 2008 after realizing that there was a need for a cigar blog with better photographs and more in-depth information about each release. SmokingStogie quickly became one of the more influential cigar blogs on the internet, known for reviewing preproduction, prerelease, rare, extremely hard-to-find and expensive cigars. I am a co-founder of halfwheel and now serve as an editor for halfwheel.
