Earlier this week, the Garden City Council voted in favor of taking up a smoking ban vote at a later date. The issue extends much larger than Garden City itself due to the municipality’s unique location.

Garden City is located almost entirely surrounded by the city of Boise, although it is governed independently. Boise passed a smoking ban in 2011, but bars and other business in Garden City have remained places where smoking is legally permitted.

It’s unclear when the City Council will take up the measure, but support for free-market approaches has already been voiced by some members.

Garden City has a population around 10,000. It is located in the northwestern part of Boise.

Update (June 18, 2014) — The Garden City Council has scheduled a public hearing for the proposed ordinance on Monday, June 23 at 6 pm. It will also include the first reading of the draft ordinance.
