It will soon be illegal to light up in Essex County, N.J.’s 33 county-owned parks and recreation facilities, as the county’s freeholders approved a ban during their meeting on Wednesday night. It also snuffs out smoking within 25 feet of buildings owned, leased, rented or operated by the county.
The ban builds on an existing one in place at the county’s Turtle Back Zoo, and applies to e-cigarettes as well as traditional tobacco products.
The county has not yet posted the full text of the ordinance, nor when it will go into effect.
Essex County is located in the northeastern part of the state and includes the cities of Newark, Orange and East Orange. It has a population of nearly 785,000 people.
