At the 2016 IPCPR Convention & Trade Show, Philippines-based cigar maker Tabacalera Incorporada showed off a number of new lines by way of the Daughters & Ryan booth, which distributes the brand in the United States. While a limited amount were released shortly after the show, the full rollout has begun in recent weeks.

Headlining the new releases is the Don Juan Urquijo (DJU) 20 Anniversario, a cigar made with vintage tobaccos to honor the contributions of Cuban cigar maker Alfredo Salinas, who joined the company in 1995 and brought refined rolling techniques to the factory. It is billed as a light-bodied blend, using a Brazilian Sumatra wrapper, a Pais wrapper grown in the Philippines from Cuban seeds and a filler mix of Dominican seco and ligero–both from 1995–and Brazilian matanorte. It is being released in three sizes, a corona (5 1/2 x 44), robusto (5 x 50) and toro (6 x 52), priced between $5.85 and $7.32.

Tabacalera Gran Reserva is a brand new, full-bodied line that uses a mix of vintage tobaccos and a double helping of ligero and spicy Perique tobacco in the filler. It is available in a single robusto vitola (5 x 52) but with three wrapper options, a natural Bahia leaf from Brazil, a Connecticut leaf or a maduro of undisclosed origin. It is priced between $10.11 and $12.36.

Perique will also be a part of two new line extensions, the DJU Perique and the 1881 Perique Bold. The former takes the original Don Juan Urquijo blend and combines it with the spice and flavor of Perique tobacco, offered in robusto (5 x 50, $7.08) and toro (6 x 52, $7.67) vitolas. The cigar uses a Brazilian Sumatra wrapper from 2011, a Pais binder from the Philippines, and a mix of Dominican seco and ligero, Brazilian matanorte and Louisiana-grown Perique in the filler, some of which has been aged for up to 17 years.

The latter increases the strength of the 1881 Perique line and comes in natural or maduro wrapper options in four sizes: robusto (5 x 55), short robusto (4 x 55), toro (6 x 55) and torpedo (5 x 52). Pricing ranges from $8 to just under $13.

Finally, the Tabacalera Maduro Edicion is the company’s flagship blend wrapped in a dark maduro wrapper of undisclosed origin. It is being made available in a corona (5 1/2 x 44), robusto (5 x 55), toro (6 x 52) and torpedo (5 x 52) vitola. The line is priced in the $6 to $10 range.

All of the cigars come in 25-count boxes.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury, the G-League's Valley Suns, and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
