Buffalo Grove, Ill. has raised the minimum age to purchase tobacco from 18 to 21, but not without controversy.

In somewhat of a unique scenario, the village board actually voted for the ordinance despite the measure being unanimously rejected by the village health commission.

The new rule will take effect in 120 days, which would be Dec. 19 given the ordinance passed on Monday.

Buffalo Grove is a northwestern suburb of Chicago with a population of around 40,000.
