Black Label Trading Co. has announced the details of its 2016 Throw Down Project, which is a collaboration between the company, Cigar Federation and the r/cigars group on Reddit.

The project is centered around a competition between the online cigar communities, with each competitor working with Black Label Trading Co. to create a cigar blend. Consumers will be then vote for which blend they liked the best and it will be crowned the winner.

Cigar Federation’s blend was created by Logan Lawler, the site’s owner, who selected a 7 x 38 lancero vitola with a Connecticut wrapper, while the filler comes from Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic.

The Reddit community’s blend features a Mexican San Andrés maduro wrapper, Nicaraguan habano binder and Nicaraguan fillers, also in a 7 x 38. An Phan, a moderator of the the group, cited Fabrica Oveja Negra’s record of using San Andrés tobacco as one of the reasons it was selected.

James Brown, founder of Black Label Trading Co. and Fabrica Oveja Negra, said that the cigars have extremely different flavor profiles, which could make for an easy choice for some consumers or an incredibly difficult choice for others. “I find it hard to pick my favorite of the two,” he said via a press release.

The cigars in the Throw Down Project will be sold through Cigar Federation’s website beginning Tuesday, October 25th at 1pm Eastern for members of the two sites and those who register for early access. Sales to the general public will begin at 3 pm Eastern.

The project will be sold in 10-count bundles with five of each blend included for $79.95. The project is being limited to just 150 bundles.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for MLB.com, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
