Review: Casa Magna Robusto

Ok, so I am just a bit late (ahem) with this review, since the controversy has died down (somewhat), but as my father always told me, “Anything worth doing is worth doing well.” (Of course, he was also fond of telling me “Son, don’t even THINK about eating that yellow snow”, but that is a story for another post.)

For the four people left in this world who do not know the story, Cigar Aficionado Magazine released it’s annual “Top 25 Cigars of the Year” choices, and an almost totally unknown cigar from Casa Magna got the top spot; beating out Padróns, Opus, Tatuajes, and, well, pretty much everyone else (which is what #1 means). One of the main reasons given for CA giving the Casa Magna the top spot was the price of the stick (about $5.25 each) and that did not sit well with a lot of people (including me) who wanted to know what the best TASTING cigar is, not the best tasting cigar under $6.

The cigars are made by Manuel Quesada (with help from Nestor Plasencia) and are composed of Nicaraguan tobacco from the Estelí and Jalapa regions of the country.

So, let’s get to it, shall we?

  • Cigar Reviewed: Casa Magna Robusto
  • Country of Origin: Nicaragua
  • Factory: Segovia
  • Wrapper: Nicaragua
  • Binder: Nicaragua
  • Filler: Nicaragua
  • Size: 5 1/2 Inches
  • Ring Gauge: 52
  • Vitola: Robusto
  • MSRP: $5.25 (Boxes of 27, $xx)

The wrapper is a very nice looking reddish brown (what they call “Colorado”) and has a nice faint tobacco smell and a little tooth to it. The cigar is obviously very well made; it just feels good in your hands and is quite firm to the touch. Honestly, it was a joy to hold. The band is very high quality as well.

After cutting the cigar, I tasted some chocolate and pepper on the prelight draw. The cigar lit fairly easily and after the first few puffs I got a nice taste of the aforementioned flavors, only stronger.

This is where we change things up a little bit: normally when I review a cigar, I go through it in thirds, because I have found that the tastes of a typical cigar will change in roughly that amount of time. However, this cigar was one of the most one dimensional smokes I have had, in that the flavors did not change AT ALL.

Not for the entire stick.

So, I am just going to tell you that the dominant flavors were some pepper, cedar, strong leather, faint sweet chocolate and just a touch of citrus (orange?). It also got a little harsh at the end, but not so much that I could not nub it.

Now, the above comment does not mean it was a BAD smoke, quite the opposite actually. In my (very humble) opinion, there are a few cigars that have so many flavors it becomes overwhelming to actually smoke, since you are always trying to place them. To me, it is just fine to have a cigar where the flavors do not vary much, as long as it is a high quality smoke and the flavors meld together nicely. This was one of those cigars, and if you can find one, I recommend trying it.

Final Notes:

  • I have read reports that there is a HUGE difference in taste and burn on these sticks right out of the store. Some reports have said that because of the huge demand after the CA rating, the (small-ish) production started shipping the cigars “wet”, and that could be the reason…if you get one of these to smoke, I would make sure that you leave it in your humidor for AT LEAST a week to stabilize, if not two weeks.
  • As mentioned in the review, the smoke from this cigar is nice and billowy, WHEN you can get some…this stick does not produce a large (or even a medium) amount of smoke, that is for sure.
  • Final smoking time was 1 hour and 23 minutes.
  • You may have some trouble (and by “some”, I mean “alot”) finding these cigars online. The reason is that the internet retailers supposedly cannot advertise them online (due to a contract with the manufacturer), but they do carry them. So, I would just call up your favorite online retailer and ask if they have them in stock (FWIW, I got mine at Jack Schwartz).

The Bottom Line: I enjoyed this cigar. It is a high quality smoke, and I bought more then five, but it is nowhere NEAR the Best cigar of the year, not by a long shot! Having said that, I do believe it is one of the best cigars you can buy in its price range, as long as it is stored properly.

Final Score: 87

Nice review, I agree with your flavor analysis. It didnt seem to change at all, and was the same for the entire smoke.

I had one of these gifted to me, and I was saving it for something special... guess I shouldn't huh? Ah well...

There is always a place in my humidor for a good affordable stick. There is also a place I keep the top-rated cigars. Rarely do the two come in contact with one another and there is a reason for that. The Casa Magna is no exception.
Great review, Brooks.

I didn't think this was a bad cigar, but I was similarly undwhelmed by the experience with this one.

I picked up a couple from my local shop just to check out the hype. a solid 89-90 cigar but not at ALL worth the #1 spot.

Good cigar at a good price, best of the year is a bit of a stretch. I will be buying more of these in a Corona and see what some age does to them. Thanks for the review and as usual the photos are kickin'.

Looks like this might be a good cabin cigar. You know you pull out cigars at the camp fire and end up passing out a dozen at a time. A box will list you 2 nights max. Save the good ones for after dinner sitting on the deck watching the bears.

I came across these at a local shop, had it in hand to buy, then put it back. I might have to go back and pick up a few.

Good review. I was really disappointed when I had mine. I guess my expectations were too high that when I finally smoked it, "decent" wasn't good enough.

Your review was awesome! I'm curious to try one and compare my experience to yours. We have a weekly night out with the boys we fondly call "cigar night". Been doing it over 7 years now. Time to look for one of these locally and see how it smokes. Thanks for the outstanding review!

Good cigar, certainly not great. I was able to smoke it before the rating came out, and to some extent agree with you that they rushed things after the rating...

The first one of these I smoked was gifted to me by you and I thought it was a really good cigar. I've had several since then , a torpedo, and several of the robustos and I have not enjoyed them as much as the first one. I agree that it has a one dimensional profile. When I'm looking through my humidor, I always pass by these and go for a Padilla, Padron or Tat instead.

Great review! I found the Casa Magna difficult to smoke- there is a flavor (possibly this orange you speak of) that does not speak to my palate at all.

There are certainly better cigars for that price tag.

Yes, I was one of the ummm....sheep, shall we say? I bought a box of these after the No.1 spot was announced. Not impressed at first, but after 6 months they're much improved. Nice smoke.

Might have to revisit after the review/tips... thanks BW!

I haven't tried this one yet; but it brings up the question about CA ratings (or any for what matters); what is the actual meaning of them? If you like it, is good/great, if you don't then you don't buy it again...

I was able to grab one of these in torito size and didn't really like it. It was too big for me I guess. Due to the CA rating the store has not be able to get any other sizes.

I liked this cigar from the original release, very flavorful and just the right amount of strength. I think your review was "spot on." I still think the best part of your reviews is getting to see your "hand written" notes. Keep up the great work my friend!

i noticed a the flavors seem to fade in and out on this, the flavors dont change per say, but they do seem to become more or less prominent as it is smoked (at least from the few ive had). i dont know if it deserves to be ahead of the P80 but its by far the best ive smoked for that price

There's been so many people hating on this cigar since it was voted #1 I haven't tried it, sounds like it would have been a more popular cigar if it had merely made the top 10.

Good review!!! I have had one of these as well and the cedar and leather taste was just overwhelming and one dimensional as well like you said.

Great review - you nailed this one dead on! I have to say that I'm impressed that you got the label off in one piece - every one of these that I've had was glued with cement, uterly destroying the label while trying to remove it. ~AJ

You pretty much nailed my impressions as well. It was by all inents a good cigar but not what you are expecting from the hype. Not one of my favorites but pretty good for the price.

I have been very impressed with this cigar when I first tried it about a year ago. If I am correct it was one of the two new products featured by Quesada at last years RTDA. In my opinion hands down one his better creations as of late and a superd cigar for the price point
